If you love excellent animation and thoughtful thought-provoking stories, this is a remarkable series that adults and children will find entertaining and touching. For a robot with such tremendous strength and power Astro Boy has a very human-like tenderness to his character, and a startling level of gentleness to his perception of the people around him, risking his own destruction time and again without hesitation to help others who are dire need. Astro Boy wants.., like so many people do..., to fit in and be accepted as a peer, as a friend, as a trusted persona in his community. But, as a robot, he encounters prejudice, mistrust, and even contempt from people who find it hard to accept a being so differently constructed than themselves. But Astro Boy faces this with a persistent good natured intent to prove himself as an ally to all people. There is no moral equivocation in this series. Astro Boy is always on the side of doing right, defending the innocent against the evil. Though we see some of the beginnings of Astro Boy and his creation, and how he came to be under the care of the professor, there are mysteries that slowly come to light about his construction and where his genesis took place. And on top of all that, there's even a very catchy theme song for the series. This is well worth the investment. The DVD's functioned perfectly and come in well designed protective sleeves in the box. The video visuals were very clear and coloful and the sound is excellent. I highly recommend this series. Also, if you are confused by all the different various "Astro Boy" dvd's and sets that are available for sale out there, stick with this one. I have seen all the Astro Boy titles that are available and this "Astro Boy Collection Box Set" is the best of them all.

In a future where robots are the new second class citizens, a brilliant scientist creates a powerful automaton to serve as his surrogate son and then abandons him. Atom is taken in by the Minister of Science and becomes a force for good, battling for the rights of humans and robots alike.

I'm lukewarm on this series. I appreciate that the Japanese language track was made available in this set, as it is far superior to the dubbed version. I was also interested in the world of this series and the darkness that is often revealed in the episodes. This is quite a violent series, even gruesome if you identify with the robot characters in the way that you are meant to, as they are often dismembered and destroyed in these episodes.

There are other factors that mitigated my enjoyment. Although he is renowned internationally as the God of Manga, I have never shared Tezuka Osamu's aesthetic, which features characters that are either kewpie-doll cutesy or grotesqueries with outrageous noses. Although several of the episodes were engaging, there was far too much of the sappy sentimentality which is so common on Japanese television. After watching several of the programs, it became far too easy to see where the stories were going--who would die, what the big "surprise" would be, and what kind of lesson Atom was going to learn.

If you're a child of the 80s (as I am) you'll love this set! I bought mine a year ago in Australia, and it's the Astroboy Deluxe DVD Collection ( still available @ Sanity or HMV). I paid $150 AUD for my set, which is outrageous considering what the set is going for here; the only difference being that the Australian set is in a tin. All the episodes are included, even "Astroboy vs. Atlas" (which another reviewer said was missing) - this episode is on the extras disc (#11) together with "The Birth of Astroboy" and the 1960s "The Birth of Astroboy".Rating: 5 / 5

When I was very little I grew up by watching Astro Boy in the 80's. It was SOOO COOOOL because I woke up every morning in the weekend getting my breakfeast and ready to have some fun watching Astro Boy. Of course! It was in spanish because Im from Puerto Rico and nothing is better to watch a saturday morning cartoon in your language.

I hope that one day this DVD collection will have multiple languages. I know that there is another collection of Astro Boy in multple languages but is the present series, and Im not interested in the new Astro Boy, Im a fan of "Old School"!!!

P.S: At least Im happy for G-Force, Robotech and Evangelion dvds in spanish.

I was a little leery of this series because of the cover and just the fact that it was only 13 episodes. Most series that have that short amount don't uusally have good content. I've got to hand it to Genoen, which I've should've known based on Samurai Champloo and R.O.D. It has great storyline and a lot of good action, though I wish there had been longer action scenes.

A couple things I'm disappointed with is the characters and their voice-overs. The unrefined seem to be in for comic relief, but it's very poor. Shiro's sexually comments and Kionosuke do it for me. I'd also would've liked to see a little more talk from Jubei's counterpart, Jubei II. Plus, the acting is a little too rehearsed. It doesn't seem very relaxed, but overall, I loved the show.Rating: 4 / 5
