I was a little wary about buying this anime but I’m so glad I bought it. I won’t go into detail about the plot- especially since other reviewers have done such a great job but I wanted to state that individuals who aren’t sure that they should buy this anime- you should! This anime has one of the most amazing visuals/graphics I have ever seen. I was stunned when I first started watching it- the graphics in this anime are so hard to describe- some are reflective, some translucent and some even seem to move (especially on the clothing). I have never seen anything like it and I own a lot of anime. The story is good- maybe a little slow at times but still good and the music is amazing. I’m only sorry that I waited so long to buy this series. Rating: 5 / 5
I REALLY liked this anime a lot, and let me tell you, I am VERY CRITICAL of anime. The reason this was good is because it tells the original classic from the perspective of Alber, the antagonist’s son, rather than from the perspective of the count/protagonist. Furthermore, although it does not stick to the original story specifically, where it differs it does so very well to the point where I actually like this version better than the original story. Furthermore, the artwork/animation is AMAZING and the style is totally different from the generic art work you see in all other animes (I can’t really describe it, you have to see it for yourself).
Unfortunately, it has a couple of scenes with giant mecha fighting (I cannot understand the Japanese obsession with giant mechas, especially in an anime such as this), but the story is so good that I can overlook this.
Definitely make it part of your collection if you haven’t done so.

Ironic that Japanese manga artists treated one of my all time favorite books by Dumas with much more respect than ANY movie makers that attempted to bring this story to the big screen. I am one of those annoying people who thinks that if you are bringing classical story to the screen you owe it to the story to stay true to its spirit. Of course there are cuts to be made when movie is done, but PLEASE let the story be recognisable. This is as far as I am concerned the first interpretation where I can see the story as Dumas envisioned it, NOT just the bare bones of it, or something totally unrecognisable. I loved it, I loved it even if they moved the story centuries in the future (and yes, still made 19 century France to be recognizable, amazing if you think about it). And I have had no problems with the ending. Even if ending is in a sense the biggest change from what is happening in the novel, I think in a sense it stays true to its spirit too. In a book Edmon is restored to his true self by love, and here he remembers his true self because of love too. To me it is as simple as that. Loved it, and highly recommend it. Rating: 5 / 5
‘Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Cristo’ is by far one of the most gorgeous anime series, I’ve ever seen. It’s remarkably stunning. Unfortunatley, the story leaves much to be desired. There are technically only three bad episodes in the set; however, they happen to be rather important episodes.
I fell in love with the series from the very start. The animation is fluid with motion and crammed with a plethora of brilliant textures and colors. It’s truly a sight to behold. I have no complaints about the artwork. There is one episode in which the animation is less than satisfactory, but that certainly wasn’t the worst part of that particular episode.
It’s a story about a man’s quest for vengence, and so much more. It’s compelling, pretty much all the way to the end. The plot is full of twists and revelations that are sure to entertain, and there is a large amount of subtle but heady themes that explore marriage and plutonic love. But the climax of the entire series is brutally godawful. It’s sappy, anti-climactic and unnecessarily disappointing.
*Spoiler* One dude kisses the other dude, and Gankutsuou’s spell is broken. Oi. I’m gay. I don’t have a problem with the subtle man-love in this story, but the ending just didn’t work. It was bad. Really bad. The actual last episode is spectacularly beautiful, but tragically boring and not important. In the end, the story digs it’s own grave.
I enjoyed watching ‘Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Cristo’, until it all came crashing down in a flaming heap of terrible writing. I recommend renting it first, if you haven’t seen it. Or buying it from an independent saler, for a much cheaper price. It aint worth 50bucks, no matter how pretty it is. Too bad too. I really wanted to love this series. I wanted to tell all my friends to check it out. But now, I just want my money back.
Also, you can watch it on your computer if you have NETFLIX. If you don’t have NETFLIX, you should. Rating: 3 / 5
First of all I would like to start out by saying that this is NOT yaoi related reguardless of what you may hear,Whaat you are hearing are the deranged fan girls who read far too much into things and instead of liking canon yaoi that is made that way that is cute stories like gravitation.or loveless which is less cute but canon.
they would rather read into this and see something that isnt there.*SPOLIER* first off these are aristocrats, that are indeed in the future however its society is like old france, where all men seemed a bit gay, even the super straight men, thats just how french aristocrats are.
Second of all the kiss in this is on the cheek.the boy loves his fiance the count has many more hints to read into loving mercedes and haidee.infact he still wants to kill albert with his dying breath.and THIRD AND MOST IMPORTANT if youve read this book ALBERT IS HIS SON!!!!
so dont let this throw you off, ignore what youve heard,if you like the book, you will like this variation on the story,it is a really crative series, and the unique animation makes it worth seeing once even if you dont care for the count of monte-cristo.I highly reccomend this series to anyone who likes the story,or likes a good deeper story in general.
